You will have noticed that several things are coming home with your child. I am going to explain a couple of the homework assignments that your child will have throughout a year. This way you will know exactly what to expect when they come home.
Weekly Review Packet...This is given out on a weekly basis and your child will have one week to complete it. It normally will be passed out on Monday and will be due on Friday. The problems in this packet should be review and your child should need little assistance. There will always be a page on the back of the packet where your child will have one word problem that they need to solve and communicate their thinking for. If any of these problems are a challenge for your child, please jot me a note, so that I can provide proper assistance.
Reading Journal...Your child will be expected to read for 20 to 30 minutes each night, fill in their log, and write a meaningful response in their journal. They will be introduced to this tomorrow, so expect it to come home this weekend.
Writing Journal...Your child will be expected to write for 15 minutes in their writing journal at least 3 nights per week. This will need to be a meaningful entry and we will talk about strategies in class for generating meaningful stories. It is expected based on the common core standards that 4th and 5th graders are writing between 1 and 2 complete pages in 15 minutes. This will be a goal that we will be working towards.
This will be the majority of your child's homework this year. I will keep you updated on other assignments that come about.
Ms. Pichler
